Yeah, you definitely need them. I believe one was originally a candohm riveted to the chassis. Those have a tendency to go bad. It's been replaced in all four of my sets. Here's another one for comparison.

I removed both of the large resistor's, the 5K 5W is reading over 6K so I'm going to replace it, the 3K 15W however measures good. If i can locate one of these I'll go ahead and replace it.
In the mean time check out the tuner installed in this chassis, Never seen one of these in a 30A1.
