OK, I think I misunderstood the original configuration. I thought it was originally HV>50M>pot>50M>(followed by HV pot or ground depending on the mod you described elsewhere), as is my CT-100. I had intended to propose HV>25M>pot>25M>50M>(ground or HV pot, etc.). You are already at 125M total not counting the pot, so now I understand the problem is mainly the 25M resistor's dissipation, not the total string resistance.

I have very sad news to report: the proto CRT is dead. I don't know why this happened, it was in operation a few days ago. I came back from Beloit this afternoon and turned it on, only to be greeted with crackling sounds and no picture. Sliding back the neck stuff revealed white getters, and a crack nearly all the way around near the base. This means there's no more proto CRT's left working in the world, and it will be a long time, perhaps never, that one will be seen in operation again.
