My 1965 Zenith roundie had the same symptoms, no HV and horizontal output glowing cherry red. The horizontal efficiency coil had a broken plastic coil form. After replacing it all was well. If that coil is in doubt it is best to change it. It is not worth risking damage to the flyback.

Yes, that coil is absolutely critical, as it's used to tune for the sharply defined 'dip' in HO tube cathode current. When the coil form breaks and the windings go springy, that resonant point is lost.
