That was one of the higher end models.
Sylvania started building minimal design sets starting in 1955. PC board, hot chassis sets, even on their higher end models. They were also building private label sets for awhile.
The fancy cabinet, World's Fair models, had the same basic chassis, that the 17" BOTL portable had.
All show and no go! Poor value for the money.

I'm sure glad you got that set. I had called about it and was informed that was already gone just had visions of someone getting it and putting a fish tank or bottles back into it. good luck and keep us informed can't wait to see it operational.

things back then were made to last and not just to get by .the glass was probley twice as thick as needed on neon bulb ,and more transformer that was needed ,so they were not under stress even with voltage surges, how many power surges happened in 77 yrs .

I thought the halo light sets used fluorescent tubes rather than neon. If they used neon that would explain why so many still work. Fluorescent would have burned out in a few years if it was used regularly.

there just running hi voltage threw a fluorescent tube in a halolight ,thats why theres no starter ,on the two i have they clipped off one of the filiment leads on each end , and just have a hi voltage trans thats why they have blue look to them.
