Entertainment centers

Here lately, I've seen many people trying to unload the older style entertainment cabinets that hold a standard CRT TV, as well as other A/V components. I see everything from cheap particleboard junk to decent quality furniture; but, the problem is that most of these sellers are wanting three figures for them.

Their asking price might be justified if CRT TV's were still in high demand; but, the fact is that most people are getting rid of these for the same reason that no one is buying them - because they won't hold a wide flatscreen TV. People need to realize the same thing I had to face the facts with when selling a used CRT TV. They USED to be worth good money; but, they ain't worth crap anymore.

We actually have such an entertainment cabinet in our livingroom that is holding a 27" CRT TV. My Mother would really like to have a flatscreen TV in the livingroom; but, that would call for getting rid of that big monster cabinet and buying something new to sit in it's place that would hold a modern TV. So, the old cabinet is staying and when the current TV dies, I'll dig up another 27" CRT TV to put in it's place.

Entertainment centers, meh. Never liked them. Lots of people just giving them away around here, the amount of ads for those rival the ads for free cats/kittens. My TV stands would probably hold any flat panel, but I would burn them before that happened.

Y'know, I've thought about that before. My parents gave me an entertainment center about 5 years ago along with a TV. It was in perfect shape, but I didn't want to give up my RCA Colortrak 2000 console.....so I ended up disassembling it and repurposing all of the wood for projects.....everything from a tube amp base, to using my band saw to cut moldings for this and that.

In fact, the last piece of it (the VCR tape corner cabinet), I'd used for a chemical shelf by my workbench for years. Just got some new cabinets for my work area that are 1950s hard rock maple, so that piece is out to the curb as I type this.

This one was pressboard photo finish junk, but there's a lot of Amish made and good wood stuff out there. Unless people repurpose the monstrosities, they're as good as landfill.....

Same problem here. My center would hold a narrow 32", just
fit my old 30" sony with real speakers. When I went flat
32" was the biggest I could use. That about equils an
old 27". The wall its on was perfect for a really big flat,
but what to do with a perfect center $900 center ?
It also held the HiFi, other electronics, nic-nacs, doo-dads,
gew-gaws & about 600 45's. I was stuck with it & a 32"

I had two of them offered to me for $20 awhile back, but they were the cheap particle board ones so I turned them down. I wouldn't mind having one that's made of real wood and nicely built, though.

Thrift shops here won't even take them anymore. Had to smash ours up and toss the particle board sections.

I had an oak entertainment center (NO particleboard!) that was six feet tall and five feet wide, all open compartments with a few shelves. Many years after not using it for a TV set, I cut it into two pieces to become shelf sections that hold my ham radio and ATV equipment, on top of an L-shaped oak desk.
