On the topic of this vintage RCA, I thought that it might be worth mentioning that some if not all of the electrolytic capacitors are NOT grounded to the chassis. It has been several years since I did my 8T-243 and the TC-127, so I can't remember the details, but I specifically remember the cap that is mounted under the chassis on a removable flange is this way. Seems like it was a two or three section.

I wish that I had a more in depth electronic explanation for this, but I'm sure one of our bigtime experts will be able to elaborate. I do know that you would have a big mess if you grounded them to the chassis.

Yes, all 4 of the electrolytic cans are floating above or below chassis ground. The 3 above the chassis were covered with cardboard insulators, but the one below chassis wasn't (until I restuffed it and added one to hide the fact that most of the old can had been cut off).

This was presumably done to allow filtering of negative voltage supplies using standard "can common negative" filter caps.

Looking good so far. I wonder how some spray on rust converter would work on that under chassis rust? Any reason to believe that stuff would harm any of the electronic components? Anyone tried this?

[QUOTE=N2IXK;3086734]Just picked up an RCA Victor set off eBay. Looks like an 8T241, but there is some discussion in the auction thread that it may actually be the 1949 model, with slight changes to the CRT mask. The set is in pretty rough shape with a lot of rust, but for $15 and a few gallons of gas, I decided to go for it.

I have the same model, waiting restoration. It must be a '49 model, as it has the newer RCA knobs.
When I picked up mine, the 5U4 plates were melted down to a small metal glob. Checked the power transformer, and it still seems to be good.
Also, the tuner detent is bad, no clicks.

I see some paper caps masquerading as micas left in your chassis...

The big ones, like the one on the H osc. xfmr can.

As a general rule any micas with a 4 digit long capacitance value listed on the schematic I treat as paper and change.
