RCA XL100 ghost
Hi and thank you gentle men for letting me join your group! I too collect vintage tv's and radio's and even jukeboxes, most of the televison sets that I have are Zenith's from the 80's and one from 1955 but that is another thread.
Anyway I have this 13 inch RCA that I acquired many years ago from a family member who I don't think ever used it until I got it, it is a ED-339-WR with a CTC 97KB chassis and a 13VAYP22 CRT, it works great and I still have the original remote for it, the problem with it is that a while back out of the blue the pictures started to ghost (looks like its in 3D ), I have tried other sources like a VCR and even rabbit ears on a digital converter and it still does it. Once in a while it will work just fine but then after a while it goes right back. I am guessing this is a tuner issue but am not sure how to go about repairing this type of tuner. Anybody have any ideas and what if any issues did this model of set have?? thanks again Kenny. |

Try resoldering the delay line (on the main chassis) and look for any other bad solder connections in that area. Also, it would be a good idea to pull the electronic tuner module, as well as it's associated control module apart and resolder the ground connections, as well as any wirewrap connections and any plugs that connect the two modules together and any plugs that connect the modules to the main TV chassis.

I was just talking to another VK member yesterday that was having a delay line issue. How exactly does that work?

The delay line actually delays the luminance signal by a few microseconds so the picture matches up with the color signal. It consists of a coil wrapped around a long tube that has a ground strip under the coil thus somehow delaying the signal. They seldom go bad, but the ground connection could have broken loose of the circuit board, causing video ringing, thus causing your "ghosts". Way back years ago I had an RCA CTC9 roundie, that displayed the same type of symptoms, the the delay line was actually the culprit. (shorted turns I suppose). In my work as a TV repairman (which I gave up as a income over 15 years ago), I had only run into 2 bad delay lines, and thats because they were physically damaged. The ghosting could also be caused by something else in the luminance circuit, like a peaking coil, etc, and yes, loose grounds are a common culprit. The attached picture shows a delay line underneath an old CTC 11 chassis. It's the long blue thing, toward the upper rear of the chassis. Your will be a lot smaller, but still serves he same purpose.

The person I was talking to was told that you could use a delay line out of basically any tube color set, and that they were all basically the same. Is that true?

They are all quite similar, but the exact impedance may not be identical, so you may get some residual ghost / ringing with a non-identical replacement.
