The Philips/Magnavox plant is in Greeneville, about 1/2 an hour from here..Knew some people who worked there-They typically had some of the HIGHEST quality ratings WORLDWIDE in the entire Philips organization.

Well I haven't had it open yet, but when I do, I'll post some pics. On this set, the customer controls are thumbwheels and I was able to clean the contacts with the cabinet still on. Chassis number=13C201
Been running it all day and it just looks right. |

So I gather that these are just alright sets?
Must've gotten a good one. Is the C3 really one of the worst chassis ever built? I had 1 or 2 of em over the years and both worked as found, but, they weren't interesting enough to keep so I chucked em. |

The C3--an the C5 25" versio are the WORST chassis NAP ever produced--IMHO.
The one you have is a modular ,C2 set, I haven't seen one in long time. Never worked on many either. Seems like it was a lot like the T-809, somewhat different layout but REAL different from the C3 or E31 sets. |

So this TV has developed a video issue...On a black raster, or a night scene, the brightness changes from one side to the other. (it is not a uniformly bright background). Should I just recap the neckboard and check for out of tolerance resistors? Normally this cures this symptom, but I was wondering if someone had the prints for the C2 chassis (the fold down chassis). I've already found 2 charred resistors in the horizontal osc section, 330k 0.25W which I changed with 330k 1W parts.
The CRT is excellent otherwise I wouldn't bother. I'm willing to bet that someone on the board has repaired this exact symptom in one of these years ago. |

"Shading" is nealry always caused by horizontal getting into the video, from a bad capacitor in the video bias supply for the drivers for the CRT cathodes. Usually--there is a capacitor off of the flyback, 10/250 or so. On your set--it MAY be higher, or not--and may be on the chassis, near the horizontal section, or possibly the power supply area. It MAY be on the CRT board, but likely not.
IF you see an electrolytic cap of 200 or more volts on the CRT board--this is likely the one. If not--hunt for it on the chassis. BE AWARE--that even if you DO find one on the CRT board--there MAY STILL be one near the source--on the chassis. |
