That looks pretty neat! I was considering the possibility of the rescue of a gutted "fishtanker" set, perhaps cutting off some of the depth to a foot or so to make a thin "retro" set... might be easier to start from scratch, although I am a poor woodworker.
I think that I would add some sort of control panel under the display area, to make it slightly more reto to my eyes.

Another "retro" set on Amazon which is much more expensive and has odd power requirements, and likely too thin for good sound:
