Even with shipping, Mouser beats him by dollars, and I get quality Panasonics.

I got burned by the Chinese caps early on - I had two of those ETR caps short in a GE B/W set, so I went back to Orange Drops. CDE has now moved all production of Orange Drops to China, so I went back to my old favorite Panasonics once Mouser started stocking them. For years, you had to go to Digi-Key for Panasonic caps, and they got pricey and had odd minimums for some values (32 pieces minimum for most sub - .01uf caps, for example.). With Mouser stocking them now, I turn to them for my quantity needs. My last buy in January came to just under 40 dollars, and I got 100 .082's and about 60 (low voltage, 25/35/50V) Electrolytics - all Panasonic FR series - my favorite FC and FM types are getting harder to find in stock.

Next up on my plate is my brother's Zenith Porthole combo that will see almost all Panasonics - I still have a few hundred older Orange Drops to use. I may be getting ahead of things - I haven't checked the CRT yet....

YMMV, but I'm not a fan of those no-name cheap caps.

What the heck are you using such a high quantity of .082's in? That's a really odd value. Just curious.....

As far as quality of the cap, I'm not convinced that it's anything more than a perception thing. Capacitor technology has been evolving for the last hundred years or so, and I'd be interested to know what makes one cap better than another here in the modern world. As in, cap A can do this while cap B can't. Perhaps for industrial applications or things that we'll never see in what we repair. Mouser has specs ad nauseum to this effect, but I can't see any real-world difference in TV and radio applications.

I've been in the auto parts industry for 27 years. Probably sold 100,000 brake rotors in my life. I'll be celebrating my 20th anniversary as an Acura dealership employee in October. I've sold every kind of brake rotor there is. In a real world application, I've never seen one last significantly longer than another. Of course people will argue this, but that's my experience, and anything different is based more on perception than anything else.....or other factors such as quality of the brake pads used or lack of lubrication on the caliper slides. Cheap ones, OEM ones, it's all metal. Pads, huge difference.

To stay on track though, I don't wanna argue about that point in this thread, we can do that in another if anyone really wants to

Now I'm not *pro* one cap versus another. I'm all for being convinced otherwise, and I'm not taking a hard line stance on the issue. I just haven't seen any reason not to use any specific "brand" of cap.

...um....price and availability? If I know the price is lower, and the parts are available, why not a name brand? Quality aside, who makes the caps justradios sells? I've had it with no-name electrolytics. Either tell me who makes them, or I'll go elsewhere. I'm no audiophile either, and don't care if it's a Lelon, Nichicon, Nippon-Chemicon, Panasonic, or Xicon - like brake pads -price is key.

As far as the .082s, I was restocking, I was replacing caps in an empty drawer. I last used some .082s on an Athena Triac controller for an industrial freezer. A friend works at a food distribution warehouse (they're big here - with all the commercial and Navy customers) and he watched a guy replace the controller, and figured it could be repaired as it had only a dozen or so parts. I got it, rigged up a 220 supply, only to have the fuse blow. Two .082uf caps later, it was working. The originals were shorted 600V Thomson-CSF box caps, and I replaced them with two 600V orange drops. His boss is happy to have a spare.

I order caps about twice a year - I've got probably 2-3 thousand film caps at the ready. I use the typical values like anyone else, but have the odd values as well. Need a 4.32uf axial 100v flm cap? Me neither, but they came in an eBay lot with some fuses, so I have them. Methinks they were telephone company stuff....

Acura and Honda - good stuff! My first car was a '74 Civic, and my last new car purchase was an Accord - still have it! HONDA - Had one, now driving another!

I work in the electronics industry. I have heard a story about one brand of electrolytics that was used in the '80, if I recall. I don't remember the brand.
They became know for early failures. They were made by a new company at the time and the people that started the company had copied the formula for the fluid from the company they used to work for. Problem was they didn't know about a minor ingredient and so the caps didn't last long.
