That's exactly what I'm trying to do, is not write it off too quickly and have the one timmy is sending me as a spare for backup, hoping this one is still good.. But I wonder if I should just take the whole fly assy out and do checks on it that way, or should I just leave it in the chassis?

you can check the focus coil with out removing anything.

and if it does test shorrted (very likely) you can replace it without removing the fly. the less you mess with the fly wiring the better. Its not that hard, but try to find an exact replacement focus coil (assuming its bad) as it makes hookup a bit easier.

it will take a min to test.

test it in circuit, no need to take apart, you are looking for VERY low ohms for a short. leave the resistor in, leave it wire, just look a the schematic ID the terms and check. Do disconnect the yoke.
oops you may have to disconnect term 4 or 2 which ever is easier |
