That fine tuning sounds like one of the early versions of "memory fine tuning", the setup where each VHF channel could be fine-tuned independently. Pushing in on the knob was a typical way to engage the tuning gear for each channel.

I've never had a ctc 9 that I couldn't get an excellent picture on. Wish I had one when I was a kid.

Found that the sync seperater tube was not in its socket, just laying in loose. Once I figured out the fine tuning system, I was able to lock in the horizontall and finally have s picture! Now to try to figure iut the convergence for this tv.
