TV repair question

For the cord to get real hot you'd have to have a real bad short somewhere. If the wrong tubes were in some sockets you could have had a short to ground, that could do it. If this set has a power transformer you will want to make sure that's not burned out before investing too much time fixing the set.

The 5U4 doesn't look too healthy.
Remove the 5U4 and just plug in the chassis. If it still draws excessive current, the transformer is history. The primary could've been damaged by lightning. There was a lot of those sets around, but most technicians didn't hang on to them. The yoke is RCA made and the cover is special to them, so you have to locate an RCA yoke.

If that 5U4 is white on top like it looks its JUNK &
probably the main problem.

Next for the yoke. Get some yoke wedges from almost any
modern color TV. Wedge it in place. Next get a yoke cover off an old yoke that has the 2 centering rings & the same neck size. Not
perfect but it wont be moved around so things should stay
put for a while. Both easy to come by....

The tubes with different numbers are probably good subs but
you may want to change them back sooner or later. For now
use the tube layout to be SURE they are in right !!!
