They have the 52-641, and 52-642 which look the same as the 53-642. The one for the 52-642 just explains that the 52-642 has an added phone jack, but is otherwise the same as the 52-641.

No mention of two batteries in the battery holder on the schematic. It just wires the 2 batteries in parallel, so maybe it was a change they made in '53 for longer battery life. It is original to the radio, because on the sticker inside the radio it shows the 2 battery holder and says "one type P-67 battery and two type D dry cells".
