Have you tried moving the ion trap magnet around ? Perhaps the CRT that died was a 10FP4 which doesn't require one ?

Thanks for the reply. The tube that died was clearly marked 10bp4. The replacement is
Not very clear. It might be a fp4. I have tried moving it around. I'll try removing it altogether and see what happens.
