Wow I didn't even know it, but the hand signals have changed a bit from back in the day. We are still taught hand signals in driver's education, but they are only left turn, right turn, and stopping. Presumably if your lights are out, you should use hand signals.

As for the year they became mandatory, I'm not getting a clear reading. It looks like 1955, but I think it might have been different for each state.

I can't seem to find any photos of old aftermarket turn signals, though I'm sure many still exist. I recall when I was young, my dad was fixing a 1930's Packard, and it had an aftermarket signal switch on it. It was just a turn signal stalk that you clamped to the steering column, and presumably some lights to mount on the outside of the car.
