I've seen 40" sets in the 4:3 format.
The KV-40XBR800 was the Sony with the 40" 4:3 WEGA tube. 34XBR960 I think was the top-of-the-line 16:9 flat tube, which was only 34". RCA's 38" 16:9 tube was curved.
