I couldn't tell you how many instances I saw of silicon diodes bridged across selenium rectifiers. Many techs were too lazy to mount a single terminal strip on which to mount the silicon diodes.

Yeah, with the selenium still in-circuit, it's susceptable to reverse leakage and possible overheating.
