If the problem is with loading the disc and getting it to start spinning, the problem could be the belt. That is the one thing I have had trouble with on Pioneer players.

I've seen electrolytic capacitors that wouldn't work properly causing cold start issues until heated up a little bit with a hair dryer.
My old 1985 vintage Sony Laserdisc player has had the same belt issue ChrisW6ATV mentioned too.
