What is this weird round 16" B&W tube on eBay?

I stumbled on this tube, which APPEARS to be a 90 or 110 degree round tube. What in Sam Hill; never seen one . Foreign TV possibly? Base looks standard though, and British & European tubes of that era usually have a totally different base.

I wouldn't prop it up on its neck like that. It might break the neck off and then a nasty implosion happens.

I hqve an old RCA ad (year unknown) that touts shrinking the length of 16 inch (round) tubes, but the drawing doesn't look like it's THAT short

The 16WP4 shows in the Sylvania tube manual to be 16" 70degree magnetic focus CRT, with oridnary pin-outs. My CRT sub. manual lists only the 16SP4 as a replacement. It is not obvious why it would not sub for some of the other glass round 16" CRTs, though I have not studied the issue.

I am the one who bought that tube from Jerry Talbot. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing last October. Jerry (jt-tv on eBay) really had some nice items on eBay, and the term "bid with confidence" definately applied to him as a seller. I quickly found what a warm & friendly person he was after calling him "out of the blue" regarding that tube (his number was listed). Jerry was surprised to hear from me, but not annoyed, and we spoke for 40 minutes! He became the first person I'd email for advice, or help on a hard-to-find part. A bond had formed that I will truely miss.

I am currently using Jerry's tube in my 1951 Zenith "Aldrich" because I wanted to use the set, but I didnt want to wear out the original hard-to-find 16GP4. And in that particular set, the all-glass tube subbed very easily.
I believe the 16WP4 / 16SP4 / 16YP4 will all sub each other.

16WP4 was used in Philco split chassis around '51-'52. There were surely other sets that used it as well.

I too am sorry to learn of the passing of Jerry Talbot.

I had several pleasant dealings with him back in the pre-ebay days. We became acquainted through Antique Radio Classified. He once arranged to trade me a CT100 with a dud CRT AND a 21CT55 for my Philco Danish Modern predicta. I thought this was a good deal, as I love early color, and had fallen out of love with Predictas. So we both were happy.

Jerry was a good guy, and will be misssed.
