Just when I thought I had the TV addiction beat, This RCA came my way, Curses! I dusted off the tools and went to work on it. Simple re-capp, re-tube and a tweak on the sound IF to take off the buzz. Plays great and has a strong 10BP4, Got lucky. Now, where to put it.....

That set makes a nice picture! You can never have too many working round screen vintage TV's. Someday these are gonna be valuable. At least that's what I've been telling myself!

I found a spot for the RCA on top of my Zenith Radio/Phono. The console is from 1946 but who knows, This exact set up may have been used in 1949.

Yeah guys, It's a nice console and a great performer!
I logged about 16 hours restoring it. The console had acres of the dreaded rubber wire, I replaced all of it with cloth covered. The set also had 2 chassis to restore (Main and Power supply) not to mention the pre-amp for the phono. Even has FM band up to 108Khz that sounds great with terrific bass booming out of the 14 inch "Concert Speaker" It's nice to have a vintage 78 player for the old records and the Cobramatic changer is kinder to the records than most of that era. A great feature is the glow around the dial and of course the green tuning eye. The walnut cabinet is in excellent condition with only a few light scratches and the photo finish is perfect. I may even sell the console to get a few bucks for "Extravaganza" coming up next month in Lansing, MI. Haven't decided yet.

What is Extravaganza? If that console was in my house there's no-way I could bring myself to sell it.

Extravaganza is the big 3 day antique radio swap meet held in July every year. Hosted by the Michigan Antique Radio Club (M.A.R.C.) Great event and worth the trip if you're a collector.

Yeah, those vintage radio meets are great. I try to get to the big AWA meet in Rochester, NY every September but unfortunately was unable to attend last year. There's actually a bunch of us AK'ers planning to meet there this year. I sure hope I can go.

I can sympathize with you on that rubber wire. I did a small Zenith radio/phono that took 8 hours to replace all the rubber wire, all I had to do was look at the stuff and it fell off the wire. I restored a RCA D22 that also had all rubber wire, 3 chassis and about 8 wire harnesses all had to be re-made. I ended up with 40 hours in it. Now I cringe when a Zenith or RCA comes in for repair.

The 246 looks great. It's to bad the tables aren't easy to find.

I found a long lost flashlight in back of the cabinet! 11 tubes in the console: 9 radio, 1 phono and 1 tuning eye. I can also post the original brochure page if anyone is interested.

Words can't do that Zenith justice! I love the way that dial lights up! Is that a 6AL7 used for the tuning indicator? Haven't seen one of those since i was on my old ship. The WW2 RDF we had on the bridge used one of those. The 6AL7 indicator is a hell of a lot cheaper to buy than a 6U5/6E5.

BTW... your RCA looks really nice, too! Great picture on that set!

You are correct charlie, 6AL7 tuning eye. The console is Zenith model# 12H090
