Atwater 55 question

I picked up my Atwater model 55. Just a couple of questions.
There are 3 knoms on the front of the set. One controls the volume, one is the dial selector. What is the third knob?
What is the best antenna for this set. Currently there's an insulated wire serving as the antenna.

I'm very pleased with my purchase. The cabinet is in great shape and the set works. I KNOW I SHOULD'NT have tried turning the set on but the owners beat me to it.

Have a great weekend!

Hi Funken,

The AK 55 is a great receiver. I had the table top "coffin" version of that set. The third knob is a local/distant switch. It is used in the distant position to give more amplification so you can receive stations at a distance. In the local position the amplification is not as great so that local stations don't come booming in. That set was made to use a length of wire for an antenna. Usually a 10 foot piece will be sufficient but the longer the better.

I downloaded the instruction manual for this set at one time but I don't remember where I got it. I have uploaded it here: Atwater Kent 55 Instructions

Where are you located Funken? Were you getting Cardinal baseball at 550? If your not in the STL area I'm suprised you can get it. I'm about 60 miles SW of STL and can't get KTRS worth a darn!
