I haven't noticed John on the board for a while. Anyone know how he's doing?

Come back John, we miss you!

I was tempted to post on the very same topic! I know he suffered a death of someone close a little while ago. I hope that it is something simple such as being busy or on vacation or something, and not something too serious. I always find his posts informative. From reading his posts. he seems like a nice person, as does virtually everybody on here.

I'm here ... just been super busy ...

Hi all! I've been working on several customers' projects to the point of working 6 days 12 hours in the shop. I just finished a massive restoration of a Dumone RA-109 complete with a replacement 19AP4. Unfortunately, the original rebuildable dud CRT was cracked by UPS and rendered useless. I'm still waiting for word on the insurance claim.

I ran into an interesting animal with this Dumont. When I got it put back together, I had this bizarre "blinking eye" effect with the vertical sweep as the V. Size control was turned up to get the picture to fill the mask. After the height reached about 2" less than the mask height, the picture would start collapsing to a line and re-expanded at about 1 Hz. Everything in the circuit checked out fine. I tried THREE brand-new (Chinese) 6SN7GT's ... same problem. Eventually, I subbed one of my more expensive NOS American 6SN7GT's ... BINGO. Watch out for those cheap imported tubes ... you get what you pay for.

Here's the screenshot from the Dumont with the 5AXP4 test CRT.

I also painted the house and garage trim and had some legal issues with Jan's estate. Eventually, I got the family's permission to get the car titled to me since I was co-signer and responsible for the loan. I've also been trying to enjoy a little nightlife and even went out on a few blind dates. Not my idea of fun, but you know how friends love matchmaking.

Hi John,

Welcome back! Sounds like you have been busy.

Please explain to the listeners why you would entrust a rare and vintage CRT to UPS? You can make up as good a story as you want. We'll listen

I have one of those 5" test CRTs as well. Sure are handy sometimes, ...even though I don't use UPS!

That's interesting about the Chinese 6SN7's. I've never seen them. I have a big box of used original quality North American manufactured 'pulls' from scrapped sets, etc. You just can't have too many of those. I use them in my audio amps too.

Actually, I packed the tube to survive normal shipping and I've actually had fewer problems with UPS than with FedEx or USPS. Normal packing obviously doesn't take into account UPS's habit of stacking boxes such that several times the weight of the package itself rests on top of it. Any normal person would stack the lightest box on top ... but UPS must not be "normal" as they crushed the top of the (double) box to the point of crushing the CRT socket and punching the exhaust tip of the CRT through the base of the stem.
