Cracked Predicta Flyback Core
Hello,
I just finished rebuilding a Philco Predicta 17-in that's been working great so far. However, in addition to some wax that's chipped off the flyback transformer, I noticed that its core is cracked on both sides near the ends of the windings. I'm planning on recoating the windings with corona dope, but what do I do about the cracks in the core? I don't have a replacement, and it seems to be working okay. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks, Dave |

Don't do anything to it. The worst that will happen is the core will "sing" a little. If it does, and it is bothersome, drip some hot glue on the cracks.
As far as recoating the flyback "tire" with corona dope, if it ain't arcing, don't bother with that either. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Also... The enemy of good is better. Capisce? |

Sound advice.
Often nothing needs doing. It takes wisdom to recognize when and self control to do nothing. Don |

Thanks for the advice. But I have to admit that I'm surprised to hear that I should also leave the flyback tire alone and not coat it with dope. I had heard long ago that you should do this as a prophylactic to prevent arcing. Well, given the scarcity of these flybacks, I guess I'll just leave well enough alone.
Grazie again. |
