Got an interesting...
...new "old" toy today, a late '40s Model 2701 made by Electronic Laboratories in Indianapolis. It's a 6 tube AM set, in a spiffy wood case, & has an interesting fillip-its tuned by permeability tuning, similar to my R-390s. Plus, its a 6 tube set-which in a sea of AA5s, is in itself unusual. Anybody know anything about these little beasties ? It plays pretty good, just a hint of hum.

The slight hum is probably caused by a filter cap just starting to go bad. If you say it's "just a hint" of hum at this point, it could and probably will get worse with time. I'd replace the filters, and the other paper caps in the set, on general principles. In a radio as old as yours, the filters are almost certain to have deteriorated, and the other caps may not be too far behind. Enjoy your model 2701. From what you've already said about it, it sounds like an excellent set, made back in the days when radios (and everything else) were made well and made to last. Hold on to it as long as you can, as they don't make them like that anymore.

It'll prolly get to go see Terry...AND my refinisher. Some lout covered part of the front w/horrid woodgrain-vinyl contact paper...Its GOTTA go. Jeff, yeah, thats what I figgered, too-An RF stage. This little guy looks to be a cut above the typical AA5 kitchen set...The permeability/slug tuning deal is also interesting-It was certainly more expensive to make, & the average Joe wouldn't be able to tell much difference, but there it is...

i have only seen 1 radio with the AM perm tuning it was a motorola and most of the chassis looked like it might be a overrun from a car radio production line. sounds like you have another rare one.

I turned it on for a minute-and yeah, its hotter'n a pot bellied stove. Once I get the cap issue straightened out, & a good alignment on it, I betcha it'll be a honey.
