Hoping to find information on Magnavox Astro Sonic

Hey folks,

I'm new to the forums, from Northern California, and new to antique electronics in general, but a big fan of anything vintage.

I just picked up a thrift-store Magnavox Astro Sonic console stereo. It is a really nea unit, and it works great, but I would like to find some more information about it.

The Model Number on my Astro Sonic is 3RP657, the Finish is DCHE, and the Serial Number is 5476259. This thing is so cool, and it even came with the original owners manual and the warranty tags that would have been attached to it in the showroom.

If anybody could give me some more information on this unit, or point me in the right direction to find more information, it would be greatly appreciated. In particular, I would love to know when this Astro Sonic was made, what the name of the model is, and what was the finish called. I should also note that I found some informtion that said that the chassis number was a helpful piece of information in decoding your Astro Sonic, but I can't find a chassis number ANYWHERE on or inside of the unit.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!!!

You should check out the Magnavox Friends Group on Yahoo - they have many of he old brochures scanned from the 1960's with the model numbers in there.

...okay I just looked through them and the closest I found was a 3RP656 in the '66 catalog. But Magnavox used similar numbers from '65 through the early 70's. Post some pictures of the set and we can probably narrow it down.

And they will tell you to get numbers off the chassis in the set, sometimes they have little paper tags, with a month and year. My '65 Astro-Sonic is Sept. 1965 on the amp by the way. Check the numbers on the radio receiver and the amp, if you have a seperate amp.
