TV repair truck picture
This picture is on page 146 of "A Pictorial History of Chevrolet 1940-1954" it was probably taken in late 48 or early 49.
Notice what the repair guys are carrying! This was a promotional picture for Chevrolet so I'm not sure if the company was real or not. Can anyone verify an "Al's Radio & TV repair" in Port Chester N.Y. at that time. Last edited by Eric H; 10-22-2005 at 07:08 PM. |

Does it really take two folks to carry the television?

Hey, that set was expensive in it's day! Wouldn't want to drop it! Guess the idea was that they were picking it up at the freight station to carry back to the showroom. Or else, maybe the GM photographer just had all the folks meet him at the station!
Loudspeakers on the roof seemed to be popular with some folks. I recall a preacher back when I was a kid. He had about 4 of 'em mounted on the top of his old station wagon. I don't know if he used it just for parades or if he just rode around preaching as he drove???

We have a Rauland tube type PA amp from around 1955 with a built in vibrator supply for 6 or 12 volt DC, they probably used such a unit to power the horn speakers.

Reminds me of the horn ODDBALL (Donald Sutherland) had on his tank in the movie "Kelly's Heroes", I can still hear "Burning Bridges" playing over the horn during battles!!

Ever so slightly OT, why are there portholes on the fender of a Chevy? I also can't find any mention of a real play named "Mrs. Button Shoes", as shown on the poster to the left. Tom

It's a '49 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery...the portholes are Buick, at least they didn't try to make it a Roadmaster by putting on 4 Portholes....

I have a '51 Chevy ton panel wagon, one day I'll get it restored, & I'll have it painted up w/"Radio & Television Repair" on the sides...-Sandy G.

I can help with a couple details, the caption for this photo was:
"The owner of this 1949 Sedan Delivery loaded it up with factory and aftermarket accessories. Note the fake Buick portholes." The Poster in the background is for a show called "High Button Shoes" with Phil Silvers. |

Ah, thanx, Eric. Aftermarket accessories clears it up nicely. And as for the title of the play, I guess I really should be getting that LCD monitor and stop going bug-eyed here. Coulda sworn it said "Mrs." Tom

The set they're carrying is a 621TS, maybe someone had traded it in on a huge 12" big screen
