B&W combo Dumont on ebay. $2500 and reserve not met

Gee, must be special. I can't wait to see when they get around to posting a picture.

Rob,

I've talked with the seller, he can't find a model or name on the piece. I sent him a picture from a DuMont ad that looks like what he described to me, also told him there weren't many post war DuMonts that would bring what he is asking. So far haven't heard back from him

Maybe I offended him with the remark.

Chuck,

At first blush this certainly looked to me as a case of wishful thinking by an unknowledgeable seller.

Doo Mont

Here's the link to that auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=3638

Sure ain't going to sell without a picture.

I can think of two DuMont's that might be worth that, one is a custom combo job with the Scott Radio (like the one on eBay a while back) the other is the 30" Royal Soveriegn but that wasn't a combo as far as I know (can you imagine the size if it were!).

Perhaps he saw this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...&category=3638
and figured that they were sold by the pound

Pictures

OK, there's a picture now, it doesn't look like a $1000 TV to me, maybe $100, unless that radio is a Scott or it's a 27" screen then maybe a bit more.

The cabinet looks like that 50's Limed Oak , impossible to refinish and the top looks beat to heck.

Opinions?

This beauty is likely to disappear so I thought I'd better post the picture here for posterity.

That is a combination of a bunch of stuff. The tuner is from the DuMont RA-101 Custom (1947):

but the cabinet and tube are mid 50s. The set is worth almost nothing.

For $25 and be close enough to pick up, it would be a good buy for a spare 101 radio/amp chassis.

Ok, I know the seller is way out of line on the price, But the cabinet and radio look to me like late forties, I have traded off several round tube sets that were converted to the larger rectangular tubes in the mid fifties. It was a common practice back then to "upgrade" instead of buying new. An old friend that has been in the tv business many years told me they made kits that had the template, tube and surround for the converson. A picture of the back of that thing would shed some more light on what was done to it.

Price cuts

The opening bid on this thing has really been going all over! Went down to 1000, then down to 600, and now up to 650! Buy it now down to 1200.

That little yellow smiley face from WalMart must have been at work here slashing prices!

marketing

The seller should say that "If you find another one of these at ANY advertised price we'll pay the difference (even if it's a lot less), and include free shipping" !

The auction is over and no one placed a bid? I'm shocked!
