Philco w/power tuning?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Philco-T...QQcmdZViewItem

Kind of a neat looking set, front trim over the knobs is missing I think.

Wonder if this had a remote, possibly wired?

I have the same TV, Philco 1957, (no uhf, or switches on the top) in a table-top model. There is a trim piece that goes over the knobs in the front, it says 'PHILCO'.

Hello Adam,

Is yours a power tuning mechanism also?? This TV Must of been one, if not Philco's most expensive B/W models for that year. Extreme 50s style. Does yours have a clicker remote???? Definetly a novelty.

No, my Philco does not have the power tuner and remote. I have a 58 RCA 21" B&W console that does, but it dosen't work, and I haven't started working on it yet. I think this Philco must have it though, the switches on the top of the set are very similar to those on my RCA.

That RCAs a keeper Adam. Sometimes adjustments for tuner to stop properly are touchy, best of luck

Adam, can you tell me what the dark rectangle is on the ledge above and to the left of the tuner knob? Looks like a slot.
I think it's supposed to be there because I can see it in the ad's for the set.

Eric, could that be a slot to hang a remote control when not in use? I have Zenith with motorized tuning, somewhat older, that has a ledge built into the cabinet above the top centre of the safety glass designed to hold the remote control when not in use. Everytime I look at this set I'm always distrubed with how imposing - sort of gaudy the way it sticks out. I suppose back then remotes were rare on TV sets and hanging one one the front seemed like a good place - provided it gets put back after use!

I have a power tuning Philco set also. Mine does not hook to a remote. My switch at the top is missing. All of the other stufff is there in my set. I plan on using a self made wired remote I have it all but restored. I will send pictures after my move.

The set on Ebay can either be a console or a table top set. It comes off the stand really easy.

The hole just to the left of the tuner is also on mine. I don't know what it is for, but it is covered by the missing trim piece. My Philco does not have the larger hole, above and to the left of the tuner.

The large hole is for the UHF numbers to show through when tuned to a UHF channel. If the TV does not have UHF it won't do anything. The hole should be covered with an opaque piece of plastic that serves as a screen. It could be missing or just not showing up in the photo. It is mounted below the hole. All the TVs had the UHF channel indicator wheel and antenna lead. Only those equipped with UHF got the tuner and pilot light. UHF was tuned with the VHF fine tuning knob so there was no separate UHF tuning knob.

The other marks on the front look like paint fade from the Bar-Over-Knob piece. It extended well beyond the knobs.

A close inspection or model number would be required to know if that TV has UHF or is a '56 or '57 model. The Top-Touch-Tuning was used on '56 and '57 models, but the knob layout indicates a '56. It could be either a mid-tier 390 chassis
or bottom tier 330 chassis. If it's a '57 it is actually a '56 carry over and would use a 330 chassis. They are both good products. The 390 is one of Philco's best.

Here is an AD I found on Ebay. My power tuning Philco is like the one on the left with the long legs.

I had a couple of these consoles, one with the power tuning, plus a table model. I parted the consoles & some of you may beat me up about it...but they were advertised here for free again & again & nobody came to get them...

Anyway, someday I'm going to install the power tuning mechanism into the table set. Actually, I think I have a factory stand to make it into a console. I grabbed it from the same pile of stuff as the set but never made the connection that they went together. As I recall, that set has UHF, so that will be a pretty deluxe set when its done.

If anybody needs parts I have a spare chassis & some other odds & ends.

Don, I'll check when I get a chance. Not sure that I have a spare thats any good. One of the sets had the ZP4 & the other was a YP4; the crt in the table model has a brightener on it. I also have a Silvertone that I haven't dug into with a Y or Z, I can't recall which, but it, too, has the brightener. Bottom line is that I want to be sure I have all I need for here.

Do you have a spare volume knob, I've been looking for one?
