Just thought I would pass it along-- a guy on the antique radio forum at antique radios.com, is GIVING AWAY 2 zenith 25" color tvs,a '65 and a '69, in the chicago, illinois area.

Hopefully, someone will be interested. I don't have room, I just went to n.c, to pick up my zenith 21" combo. and I am going on vacation next week.

go to the site, and click on "radio classified. You will see the ad there.

Hi Jack,

Im in chicago, so Im very interestd in those two sets. He posted his thread 4 days ago and nobody replied yet. I hope he still has them as I will certianly take them and post the pics here on AK so you guys can see them. They are rectangular sets, but like I said when I first started on AK, I'll take whatever I can find that is color and has tubes!!!! Doesnt matter what it is, they are hard to find! Maybe one of them has space command! (yeah right, I cant find a zenith with space command to save my life!!)

Thanks for the note!
Doug

Good luck!!

I hope that those are good sets, and maybe one of them will have space command. That big zenith combo i just got has space command, and a 25lc20 chassis with a round tube. I have not yet gotten it out of my van, as I am going out of town, for the next week.. and I don't think I will have web access.

I will talk to you all next saturday.

GOT EM! HERE THEY ARE!

The man giving the sets away was out of town, just got back to me yesterday evening. Ive been looking for a space command 600 set for the longest time! Couldnt believe my ears when he told me one had sc 600. sc600 set has the 20Y1C50 chassis and is from 1968. The set is in super nice shape and yes, it works excellent without any electronic work done by me or him. It just survived the test of time! I love that motorized hue control, you can hear it buzz as you press the remote buttons to adjust it!
This was his grandfathers set, and he had a new chromacolor crt put in it sometime in the mid 70s. Its somewhat strange to have a new crt in it, as almost all the tubes are orignal? Original crt must have failed early? The crt is bright and displays nice color. He didnt have the remote as it got lost years ago, but luckily I had one from ebay that I bought in hopes to one day find one of these. The guy was into vintage 1930s radios, so he had tons of compactrons that were useless to him, so he threw those in with the deal too.

1966 zenith

This was the second set, this one got abused. Chiped woodwork on the bottom, lots of top scraches missing zenith name plate. It works though. Im debating if I should use it as a parts set or what? I need the knobs to fix my 67 table top zenith with missing controls. That same set has a bad crt, but the cabinet is mint. Ill probably restore that set with parts from this one.

color sets for free in illinois

Well, i am glad that you got those, and glad to see that one was a space command. I had hoped ,that when I passed along the info, that someone would get those sets, and save them from a date with a landfill.

glad to have helped.

Jack, If it wasnt for you, the sets would probably be gone. Thanks a million for letting us know! I got to add something to my collection that I have been looking for, for a long time!

Thanks

As long as all the thank-yous are going out....

Thanks for posting those detailed pics. I've always wanted a color-tube space command set too (I've got a Solid State color, and a B&W).

Too bad about the Zenith tube-mold. My grandparents have a picture of me, taken in about 1976, in front of their '68 Zenith. Same problem even when closer to new.

Q: How does that thing tune UHF?

its pretty interesting on uhf tuning. Basically, the UHF slot on the vhf tuning drum is an open window, Inside the vhf dial drum is a UHF dial drum so when you tune uhf, you watch it through the same window as vhf. The big knob is only UHF. One thing for sure, I like this system a whole lot better than those pain in the neck spot light channel indicators. You probabaly know them as the tuners that display the channel number in the center of the dial. They are a pain to adjust if you ever need to replace the dial lamp. Its almost impossible to get it perfectly focused on the dial showing the complete channel number!

Not too long ago Im watching this tv and the focus starts to go. A slight corona arc is heard. I take the back off and feel around the hv cage. I nearly burn my hand that darn thing was so hot! that flyback just melted inside the cage! Wax all over the place! This was a result from the extreme high voltage situiation I delt with due to a bad varistor in the hv control circuit. Just put in a new fly363 thordarson from moyer. the set works wonderfully and is running nice and cool! Thanks moyer!
