Hi;

Just got a new lead for a "buried treasure" and since I'm not that knowledgeable on the value of these things I thought I'd get a consensus from the experts.

Attached is a picture of a TV found in an attic. The owner wants $40 for it. The only information he was able to supply other than the photo is that it is an RCA and that it's very old.

What do you all think?

I think it's a Crosley.

Bob:

Check the brand. It looks more like a Crosley from the early 50s than an RCA.
Either way, $40 is the high end, but not unreasonable, in my opinion. I would avoid anything with a metal picture tube because of the low survival rate.

Let's see what some others have to contribute.

$40 sounds fair to me...that age of set is non-existant in my area at any price!

I'm going to see if I can have this guy check for a model number somewhere on the set. Not sure why he thinks it's an RCA, but a model number should spell it out for us.

If its between you gettin' the set for 40 bux, & it makin' a one-way trip to Ze Fill De Lande', I'd think I'd get it...As long as the CRT's good, you have a pretty decent chance of bringin' 'er back to life...

Hey Kid, go an' get it!

$40 is low-end in my book! Original owners are dying off at an alarming rate, and their descendants are generally unenlightened (by the warm glow of tubes, that is). You'll be sorr-yyy later if you don't! And I'd like to take the building it's in, too! Pre-Roundie houses aren't made anymore, either!

I hope that is a shadow I see on the crt face and not an air filled crt. Take a close look. It may be a metal crt or just a cracked neck. Who ever buys it better make sure the tube is intact. I dont think it looks like an RCA either. Also, I would hand the man $30 and take it home. He will probably feel lucky to get that.

Thanks for the comments and advice. I'm still trying to get the guy to find a make and/or a model number. No luck so far though....

If I do decide to go for it, I'll be sure to take my CRT tester with me to check the picture tube.

I finally got the guy to at least find out the make of this pictured set and it is indeed a Crosley as several of you thought it might be. We also came to an agreement on a price of $25 if the picture tube is still good. I'm most likely going to check it out next week.

I'll let you know how I make out.

Yes....there you have it. If he can sell it for $100 before I get a look at it next week..so be and more power to him.

I suspect he should consider himself lucky to get the $25 I have offered and he accepted.

When he posted the ad I told him the set was worth $50 max.

Hi Gang;

Yesterday I made the trip to check out this set. It is a Crosley, and it looked pretty rough. I was almost certain the crt would be a hopeless cause from the looks of it. To my amazement when I hooked it up to my crt tester it darn near pinned the meter! What a pleasant surprise. It's a 12" round tube and apparently is in excellent condition.

I decided to take the set after all. I paid the owner $25 and we loaded it and it's table/stand onto my truck and off I went. It's missing some sort of a disc or plate around the tuning knob which I'd guess is also why there are no channel numbers visible, but for $25 I can't complain too much.

I havent figured out the model or chassis number yet. I'll let you know when I get it up and running.

Just wanted to give you all a final report on the sad little 1950 Crosley I picked up out of a basement in Jersey City NJ for $25.00 early last month.

It turned out to be a fairly simple restoration with the most difficult part being the undoing of all the crummy repair work done on it in past years. Aside from that it was just a matter of replacing caps and off value resistors and a few weak or bad tubes. The picture tube looks great and was replaced at some point with a crt from an outfit in Newark, NJ called Mercury Picture Tubes. I guess the only negative I can say is that the channel indicator is missing. The knob that is used to turn the station selector is there, but the indicator that sat behind it and displayed the channel number is missing. All in all it doesn't look too bad though.

Now it runs like a champ and seems very happy in it's new home.

On to the next challenge.
