Favorite comedy team...

Just a little outside of the topic ...but then again...

Goin back through the years...there have been comedy teams, and even duos that have made us laugh our as....uh...... Our hearts out!!!...

There have been the Marx brothers ...Laurel & Hardy..And the timeless Abbot and Costello.....and a whole slew of others.....

So just to get out of the Hardware aspect of Early TV...lets discuss the programming that we all grew up with......

I'm curious of the results..... (that and THOR thinks I post too much about the weather!!)

The great Bob and Ray or to a lesser degree Stiller and Mira. But as I think of it, these are more radio teams but very funny none the less.

well of course for the "golder era" of TV ....the ultimate king and queen have to be Lucy and Desi ...and even now their comedy shows seem timeless...technically Desi invented the two camera technique used ever since and of course they were in glorious monochrome.

Lucy of course went on to make the Lucy Show (with the wonderful Vivian Vance) which spans the move to color in the early 60s.

Perfect to watch on a nice roundie!

(I) Laurel and Hardy...Too many bits too mention but I very nearly pissed meself watching a film in which they try to erect an antenna for Hardy's new radio. ( Sorry can't remember the name of that short ).

(II) Abbot and Costello .... Whos on First

My brother Dan used to play the Charlie McCarthy radio shows for hours on end. Especially the WC Fields guest appearances.

I don't remember if "The Bickersons" was just a radio show or if it was on TV as well.

I'm too young to know this stuff. I caught it on the retro-rebound thanks to early cable stations like WTBS, WGN and WVTV (out of Milwaukee) playing the old shows.

Personally, my crowd got their yuks from Monty Python courtesy of the local PBS affiliate. I also enjoyed stuff like Morcambe & Wise, Alas Smith & Jones and my fave, The Two Ronnies.

As for classic comedy programming, I once watched an episode of "That Was The Week That Was" but it was a little too thick for me.

If anybody here ever goes to Manhattan, visit the Broadcast Museum and you can watch tapes from their gigantic collection. I watched a Muppet show, Dick Cavett (with Stan Freberg) and TWTWTW.

I've seen just about everybody mentioned and they're all great....but my all time favorites are .........

Tim Conway and Harvy Korman...... from the Carol Burnett Show ...which ran for 11 years from 67' to 78'....

The best part was watching them try to keep their composure on live television....many times ole Harvy would have to turn his head and laugh in the middle of a skit when Tim would do something totaly off the wall......

Too bad the Variety Show went the wayside.....sitcoms just 'reely' SUCK......

Like Alan, I gotta go with Hope and Crosby as my all time favorites.

Laurel and Hardy would be a close second.

Course, I've been known to enjoy an old Martin and Lewis movie as well.

For some reason I cant get into Laurel and Hardy....Abott and Costello a bit...My favourite are the Three Stooges by a long shot.

Also: Warner Brother's cartoons with the two cats imitating Abbott and Costello...Babooooooooooot!!! Look, I am a Spitfire!!!!

Of course, Bob and Ray were outstanding, and much of their recorded material is still hysterical today. Along the same line, there was another, similarly brilliant radio duo in Washington, DC called "The Joy Boys". The Joy Boys were WIllard Scott -- you may have heard of him :-) -- and Eddie Walker. They were on the radio for many years... even as Willard's day job was as weatherman on the DC NBC affiliate. Willard was also the first Ronald McDonald, but that's another story. The other interesting factoid: Eddie Walker is blind. Besides success on radio, he also co-hosted "AM Washington" or something like that on the DC ABC affiliate for some time.

I listened to the last incarnation of the Joy Boys show on WWDC in Washington in the early 1970's (as an aside, WWDC, just a couple of years later, was Howard Stern's first big-market gig).
