In the late 80's and early 90's I would ask people older than I "what the hell were people thinking buying avacado or harvest appliances?" The response was that up until that point you could only get white, so any new color was welcome.

Well, 20 plus years later, I am that wierd person who would love to have a Harvest Gold fridge and stove. As it is, my stove and fridge, both over 20 years old, are almond, and thus "out dated and need to be replaced with the latest and greatest stainless stuff" or so those who are racing with the Jone's would have me believe.

That is odd that he would say white is all you could get, up to that point. Appliance companies started making colors in the early 50's. If you read my reply in this thread(reply #201) it lists the years and colors that the different companies sold. At various times, you could get pink, yellow(a pastel yellow), turquoise, brown, grey, blue. Harvest Gold and Avacado came out in the late 60's and even those weren't the only two colors available at the time. You could get a Poppy Red or Coppertone Brown as well.

Gotcha. At the time it made sense to me, but I guess now looking back, yeah they did offer colors. And I remember the coppertone brown as well, child of the 70's that I am.

The only thing I can think of is that in his "world" he only saw white appliances so that explanation seemed to work.

I have several different colors. I have a dishwasher, wall oven, and two dryers in pink. Washer, dryer and refrigerator in turquoise. Refrigerator and range(lower oven and oven above) in coppertone brown, Dryer in avacado. Washer in grey. 3 washers, 2 dyers, and a gas stove in white.

They also had stainless steel. I have a wall oven and cook top from 1958 or so, and they are all in stainless steel.

Nice, seems like you've got it covered. How do you decide on paint colors for the rooms with so much going on with the appliances ; ) Lol

As I recall the havest gold was darker around the edges not all one color.
I think it depended on the brand. I know G.E. had the darker around the edges with the lighter as you move in. I have a G.E. Americana fridge and stove in coppertone brown that has that as well. I do know of other brands that had just the solid color.

The kitchen I have pink appliances. The walls are a soft yellow. Laundry room is turquoise appliances and walls are the same soft yellow. I have an outdoor kitchen with the coppertone brown fridge and stove, turquoise metal cabinets, and a little pink thrown in there. The remainder of the appliances are in a secondary laundry room(has 4 washer hookups and 4 dryer hookups.

Here is a link to a site, that has the different colors of appliances. It lists them by year and the company.

Wow, that's amazing. Even gives the PPG codes etc. Hmmmmm, I've painted a couple of cars before so why not my stove and fridge? No block sanding and bondo work anyway ; ) As I recall the havest gold was darker around the edges not all one color. That's prob why they list dark and light.

Thanks, that's a tremendous resource.

Sadly people have been conditioned to be satisfied with garbage and its sad......

I have seen people (Even my own parents) take perfectly GOOD things and replace them with something else (Which isnt as good WHICH THEY THINK IS BETTER!) -- Its really sad what the elite have done to people...... (To make them easily managable (Those with WEAK MINDS are most vulnerable))

While refrigerators from the 60's and 70's are energy hogs(the frost free ones). The refrigerators from the 50's and prior (the manuel defrost refrigerators) use about the same if not less energy than the refrigerators that are currently on the market.

It was hard for dealers, especially small ones, to carry a lot of different colors of appliances in stock since there were so many of them. And, white always was the best seller so you had to have plenty of them. Usually colors were ordered and often the kitchen ones were sold in sets for new homes or remodels.

I remember in my grandfather's store in the 70's about the only non-white appliances he had in stock were harvest gold or blue. I imagine in the late 50's and early 60's the more likely in stock colors were pink and turquoise. If he had other colors it was more likely to be laundry equipment. I think that was because those usually went in the basement and people were less picky about the color. And, if somebody wanted a fridge in brown he could say here's what the color looks like on a washer and I can order the fridge and have it in a couple of days.

Some makers tried offering appliances with changeable panels of different colors. That way the dealer didn't have to keep a lot of colors in stock and just put in the right panel on delivery.

CF; Love that paint link ! ! !

Here is the color I painted my '73 Mustang......

http://mustangattitude.com/cgi-bin/c...r=2495&rows=50

http://mustangattitude.com/cgi-bin/c...&scomm=Gremlin

Mine was Fresh Plum Metalic.... Might be slightly different than the link....

But that Gremlin looks just like it....

Remember the commercials for that car....?

Girl drives into a gas station...... Attendant, old guy, cigar smoker I think says... "What happened to the rest of your car toots".

They would be killed today for an ad like that......

ahhh, the good old days.....

Follow that up with a "The Cool refreshing health taste of Salem Cigarettes..."

I think today, I could get into a Gremlin.......

Haha, gotta love it. Take that feminists. I would prefer a '76 Gremlin. In regards to the ads for smokes, they occupy the entire back covers of my vintage Road and Track magazines that I have checked out thoroughly. Could be on all of them for all I know. I have a bunch from 1977 to 1985.

I've been looking for that commercial on youtube, but no luck so far....

But I found this one for a pacer... I remember seeing this on tv when I was a non-driver....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49fT3ufReI4

I always liked the '77 LTD, all cars without a metal window frame I use to think were cool.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=miIaKSed3sc

Alright I'm just wasting time with this.....

Ok, just one more..... this is funny stuff..... Why don't they do in depth
comparisons like this anymore.......?
