This is indeed a tough one! The control panel is skinny, more like that on a Sylvania set, but the bezel on the "halolight" sets would have been white rather than color matched to the CRT. I found one Sylvania set in an ad that apparently does not have "halolight" ... but it has a planter in the base!
http://www.tvhistory.tv/1952_LIFE_Sy..._Halolight.jpg See the "Pierce" model... perhaps they produced a similar set without the planter? Where was the set purchased? possibly it was a "regional" set that was not sold throughout the country? jr Last edited by jr_tech; 07-13-2010 at 12:58 PM. Reason: add question |

I believe another possibility is Westinghouse; I recall one from not long ago that looked similar.

I just found a few more photos, and I think this one may have the shot I've been looking for...

Yeah, it does have a similarity to the Sylvania and Westinghouse sets. I'm still searching for better pictures of some of these models and I've found the selection to be rather limited. In this more recent picture I've posted, you can see the feet at the bottom of the cabinet and after enlarging the picture, I could seem a nameplate or something of the sort at the center of the control panel. Can't make out what it say's. I also was wondering about the selection of televisions in certain regions of the U.S. and in this case, we're talking about South Carolina.

I wish that we could somehow get more detail in the center of the control panel... is that a nameplate? or a pencil box door? or perhaps some small knobs?
If Knobs, this Andrea might not be too far off, but it is a 1955 set (but perhaps their 53-54 sets were similar) : http://www.tvhistory.tv/1955-Andrea-CV021.JPG jr |

It does bear a resemblance to the Andrea. I couldn't find any pictures of a 1953 model, though. This picture probably doesn't help either, considering that my dad is standing right in front of it! But, I could make out what looks like some sort of grid-like pattern to the control panel... unless, that's just a reflection. It's also notable that the edge of the cabinet is very thin around the picture frame... just barely an inch of wood showing from the front all the way around. Most tv's like this I've seen have leg's at the bottom that are slanted, or curved, or in some way separate from the flow of the cabinet coming down. The legs at the bottom of this one are very flush and simple. I figure once I find a brand that did this, I'll probably be onto something.

Is that a booster, rotor control or UHF converter on top of this set

I ran across that picture with the cat just awhile back somewhere or another. There seems to be a set just like that one for sale in my area... the listing doesn't say, but it looks like an RCA to me.
http://greenville.craigslist.org/atq/1804706000.html Jeez, and here's another one! It's missing the little pencil box door. http://greenville.craigslist.org/atq/1851879154.html See what I have to put up with, guys? I seldom find a pre-1960's television around here, and when I do, $150 seems to be the magic number.

As far as old photo's that bring the past to life, it doesn't get much better than this! These were actually taken around 1954 and a few years thereafter. It's incredibly uncommon, but pictures taken as color slides were often in amazingly clear quality.
