The audio arrangement was typical of battery sets in those days. Audio right off the detector for locals or other strong stations through headphones. One or two stages of audio for DX on phones or for speaker operation. The filaments for the audio tubes would be off until a plug was inserted into the appropriate stage's jack. This was a way to save batteries and hours on the tubes.
When AC operated sets came along in a few years nobody cared about saving batteries anymore and people wanted volume so they tended towards mostly speaker operation.

One thing I am curious about, all the tubes are good, but at night I get one station and during the day I get two.I have an ant. in my attic and it works well with other sets. it goes back and forth across the attic 6 times.And the third stage of tuning before the detector is the strongest one and it picks up 1150AM from about 50 to 95. The dial of course is 0 to 100. I have tried changing tubes around. any Ideas?

Well, I got a little curious and hooked my signal generator to it. The radio's range was 500kc to 1250kc. Even using a signal generator I had to have it turned up pretty far to get the signal through. So, unless I am wrong these early sets were not to powerfull. Anyone else have one of these sets running feel free to let me know if you have better results.

Your attic antenna should be OK. Do you have a ground hooked to the radio? These sets needed one. All three tuning caps should make a difference in tuning and you should be getting good signal strength across the band if each cap is tuning its stage and the tube is amplifying.

I do not have a ground on this set, I will hook one up, thanks. All the tuners do make a difference but the third is strongest. I had to fix my digital voltmeter and checked the grid leak det. resistor and it read 7 megs and should be 2. I will have to find a new one.

Oh WOW, it is amazing what a ground wire will do. I am in lima, OH. and just picked up am 800. Well this may not be impressive but it is an improvement. Now the local stations are coming in loud enough that I have to turn the filaments down. Thank you, now I get to play awhile and see what I can get.Oh, bye the way now the tuning caps are more even in there strength.
