The mirror in the lid might b cheaper to simply replace. There are places on the web which will sell you a front surface mirror cut to order for reasonable money.

My set has the same tuning knob, but the channel numbers (2-13) are decals on the wood panel. Not sure of the tuner configuration, its been a while since I was inside it, and as I acquired it already restored, never became that familiar with its inner details. It does have a sweep protection chassis.

Excellent! I knew some of you guys had mirrors re-coated, but wasn't sure where.

I check the 3NP4 for filament continuity last night and it's good Also no signs of burns on the face.

I've been through the whole set now, but have yet to find a serial # or date. This tag hanging off the HV box is the only label.


The screen cleaned up fairly well. I don't think it's ground glass as I've read elsewhere though. It seems more like a coating that has chipped in a few areas.

Aren't the mirrors in all those projection TV sets we see on the curb every week front surface mirrors? If so, you could scavenge one for free.

Those likely aren't big enough; the optics in modern projection sets are very different and generally have only a small mirror (few inches square) in the back and a series of lenses to make the image fill the screen - they don't need as big a mirror because they don't have a collapsible front and can have a fixed optic path.

The last one I tore apart had a mirror that had to be at least 20 by 24 inches. This was from a large fixed-front projector set found on the curb, predating the DLP sets. They still commonly show up for free on Craigslist, or on the curb on days designated for large refuse items. Mine is probably in one of the storage bins now, I used to mount it outside by the bird feeder just to see what reactions I'd get from all the little critters. Huh, today I learned. The only ones I've ever seen the inside of have had what amounts to a single lens at the back of the projection cavity with small mirrors somewhere in behind.

I took one of the rear projection sets apart (3 CRTs), and it had quite a large front surface mirror. But I managed to screw it up trying to cut it down to size.... so I would recommend taking any salvaged mirror to your local glass place and have them cut it down to size.

Nuts! I saw one out in the trash just two blocks from my place a few weeks ago. It never occurred to me there might be anything worth salvaging in it.

Was it your first attempt at cutting glass? Mucked up my first crack as well until I got the hang of using/oiling the cutter and producing the "ripping silk" sound that indicates a clean cut that will break properly.

Obviously you'd have to cut the mirror from the non-coated side to get it to work.

I think all the projection sets I've seen may have been DLP, that could explain it.

Well, in all fairness, you didn't exactly have mirrors for a projection set to worry about at that time either...

I have a couple cosmetic questions for anyone who has one of these sets.

Looking at the backside of the screen where the foldouts attach, I have a 3/4" spacer on the left, but none on the right. I'm guessing the right side had a spacer too, but the wood broke loose like it has in the left and someone removed it and drove the screw deeper into the frame ?


I'm also wondering about this spring loaded flap over the power supply. It seems to serve no purpose other than getting in the way ?

on my set, the cardboard flaps are taped in place. Not sure if this is original or not. No spacers.
