Yep, for some things it works well. You spray the suspect component and it will get frosty looking; give it a few seconds to sink in and watch to see if it makes any difference. Can be used on resistors, capacitors, etc. I would try to avoid spraying it on the tubes. It doesn't always work but I have had it be very helpful to me more than once.

Got it going again, the horizontal trouble turned out to be a bad 82pfd capacitor. I also finally got around to adjusting that tuner coil to get ch3.

aargh! Problems keep developing with this set. Well, I do watch it quite a bit, and I don't think that many of today's sets will be still going like this one when they're 51 years old. But now the tube socket on one of the 5U4s appears to be bad. Everytime I turn the set on I have to shake that tube to get it to light up, and I tried 3 different tubes all with the same result.

It's up and working again, the trouble turned out to just be that the wire where the power transformer hooked to the filament of one of the 5U4s was broken. Also every time I had turned this set on for a few weeks the horiz width kept decreasing, and I kept turning the control up, that problem turned out to just be a weak 5U4, there wasn't enough voltage anywhere in the set, not just the horizontal. I had put in a used one that was on the weak side before, because new 5U4s have gotten so expensive. I took that one out and I found another used one I had that tests better, voltages in the set are back up to what they should be.

Check this out, another local TV collector just brought it by totally unexpectedly yesterday. I know its a little out of focus and hard to read, I'm still trying to figure out how to use this camera, the same button that focuses it also takes the picture, so when you take the picture, it goes out of focus. I'm probably going to scan it in a few days and I can put up a better copy then.

So a month or so ago I was watching this set and first the horiz drifted off frequency, and then I lost all HV.

So I pull the chassis out today (and this is one of those sets where the crt goes with the chassis, I don't think anyone should have ever done this with a 70deg. 21" crt). So I check the horiz osc tube and horiz output tube and damper, all ok. Then I turn the set on (with the chassis and crt still connnected and sitting on the bench), and I get no picture at all, but I can hear the yoke when I move the h. hold control. I check voltages at the horiz osc, and output tube, and damper and everything looks ok, but still no picture. So I unplug the set and go to unplug the 2nd anode connection from the crt thinking there's no HV so I don't discharge it first, and yaargh!!!!

there was plenty of HV. Then I turn the set on again and it works fine, I got full HV, the picture came up, and I can move the h. hold control all the way from one end to the other and not loose sync. I'm not sure what just happened, but I'm going to run it up on the bench for a while and see if anything happens, if it's still working in a few hours, I'll put it back together.

Really strange , any chance of a weak resistor that loses tolerance once the set's warmed up ? , to still be holding HV is strange

It may be...

I fooled around with it, and couldn't get it to do anything, even after it was on for a while. It seems to work ok now. I tried swapping tubes, I replaced any resistors which tested a bit off, and swapped out all the mica caps that had anything to do with the horiz, (as before this set had a strange intermittent horiz problem caused by a mica cap - I thought maybe others might be doing the same thing). I also changed the horiz hold control as it was a bit scratchy even after I cleaned it a few times, the shaft is about 1/4" too short on the replacement though.

This crt is still just as good as after we rejuvinated it (but because the HV went out the very next day, it hadn't been used at all). That 19" '61 Zenith we did (which is more of a watcher), has gotten a bit weaker over time, but is still better than it was before the rejuvination.

Here's a pic of the Westinghouse, all back together.

How about a loose tube , weak socket contacts ect...

I tried swapping tubes, shaking them in their sockets, etc, when the set was running and couldn't get any problems to reoccur.
If the problem was another mica cap going bad when it heated up, I fixed it because I changed all of them.
If it was a resistor going bad when it heated up, it could still be in there, I only changed the ones that tested a bit off with the ohm meter. But then I couldn't get the problem to reoccur even after it was on for a few hours.
The horiz hold conrtol itself was acting a bit strange if I shook it, and I replaced that, it may have been the cause of the problems.
The horiz in this set has always been a bit strange in that it will momentarily loose horiz sync whenever I change the channel, but once it's on a particular channel, sync isn't weak at all, it stays even when I turn the hold control all the way from one end to the other.

It's been on most of the day and is still working, so I think (at least I hope that) it may be ok now.
