The Manchu was a bargain even without a good CRT. There is nothing quite like that set. You can see one in the corner of the big dinner party scene in A Place in the Sun with Liz Taylor and Montgomery Clift.
Is there a 19" tube that you could use as a temporary sub with a new mask, while you search for the unobtanium 20BP4? Phil Nelson

I don't know how much the Manchu weighs.... but is is going to be a lot. Chuck Azzaline has one, and could probably answer that. I have not yet taken delivery of the set. I am thinking that if the rectangular CRT currently installed is well done, then I would prebably leave it that way. Using a 19" round CRT is no more right or wrong. But I will be on the hunt for a 20BP4!
I am very much looking forward to restoring this set. I love DuMont sets.

That makes two of us looking for a 20BP4! I have a dud 20BP4, but can't quite bring myself to spend $1000+ to send it to RACS for a rebuild, and I suspect that possibility won't be there much longer. On the other hand, I suspect eventually a set with a 20BP4 will turn up, and for not that much money. Too bad this one turned out not to have a 20BP4. I subbed a 19DP4 (purchased from John Marinello 5 years ago or so, if I remember correctly) into my Westminster, which is a reasonable sub. It doesn't really fill the corners of the 20BP4 mask, however, so I've often thought that a rectangular tube sub might in fact be a better match. A 21 inch rectangular tube might just fill the mask nicely. Next problem is that the original deflection yoke won't produce a big enough raster to fill the screen of the 66 degree 19DP4. I'm going to return to that problem again one of these days to see if lowering the high voltage may do the trick. May need to sub the yoke as well, so that will be a bit of a project in itself. In the mean time I'm OK with a slightly too small raster. Good luck with your search for a 20BP4. Hope you find two of them!

Yeah, I thought of you almost immediately upon learning the Manchu needed a 20BP4. Good luck to both of us! If I had your dud, I would probably have sent it to RACS... cost be damned! :-)

Henry, you are da man! Thanks so much for picking it up for me. I gotta talk to Chuck about getting it and the Gray picked up.
If I ever find a good 20BP4, I would consider converting it back to its original configuration. But I don't think putting a 19" CRT in place of the 20CP4 is really any better, so will likely leave it as is. Of course, I would restore it electrically. Cause thats what I do. :-) Thanks again Henry

Thanks! That National is HUGE for a 7" set. I'll post a whole bunch more in the upcoming days.
