Yeah, the QST nomogram was an April 1st joke. There was a general sense at the time that Hz was adopted that it was kind of dumb to take a unit name that described what it was (cycles per second) and replace it with the name of a person.

Good work bringing that Crosley back to life, and lucky you had those pots on hand. My pot of pots was running low and I needed a specific one; at Kutztown I always rummage through assorted junk boxes and was happy to come home with half a dozen useful pots.

I've been experimenting with this technique for the last year or so. I have a Philco 15DX and RCA 630TS that have flaking, aligatored finished. I really want to avoid refinishing them, but I need to do something. So I've been slowing sanding, touching up and clear coating them with lacquer. You can still see the old patina and flaws, but now they're protected - just like your radio :)
