Picked up a 1948 Emerson.

Cory, I believe you have one just like this?
Picked it up near San Diego today. It's in pretty good condition and complete except for the incorrect channel selector knob (anyone? anyone. ;) ) the CRT had a big short on the G1 (what exactly is that anyway?) I zapped it with the "remove shorts" function about a half dozen times and it went away for the time being. Didn't have any emissions either till I cooked it at 8.5 volts for a while, now it checks really good, we'll see how long that lasts. The set doesn't work, just hums out the speaker so it needs caps. Eric,
Email me your address and I'll send you the knob. G1 = Grid #1, usually where video signal is connected to CRT. Chuck |
ouch.
That had to do some damage to the video output circuits. |
Hey Eric,
Yep, that Emerson is just like mine. In fact, I changed out the 'lytics tonight. It looks like a real easy set to work on too. I'll keep my fingers crossed for your crt. ;) |
Hi Cory.
I looked up the thread on yours, man your set is just like new! This one is very clean but not like that. |
Hmm, so unlike the H-K short I guess an isolation transformer won't help this one?

Tinkering
Played around with this set a little tonight.
The CRT still checks really good, the short popped up just for a moment and now is gone. Pulled the HV cage off and the 6BG6 had a white getter and in fact was broken around the bottom near the base. Installed a new one and I have some HV at the top of the 1B3 but nothing coming out the bottom. I suspect the B+ is low from bad capacitors and it's just not generating enough HV to fire the heater in the 1B3. Something else I noticed, while I had the CRT connected to the tester and in the "Emissions" position, there was a purple glow inside the neck under the Ion trap. This was the "Good" "surface of the glass glow" and not the "Gassy inside the elements type of glow" :) It didn't do this when the set was turned on so I would guess the tube was not being driven by the video circuits? Eric |
I had a picture tube that had a glow inside the elements it this the first hour or so it was in service. The gas in the tube must have been"burned off"
|
or the getter absorbed it.
Thats what the getters are for. Its serving its purpose. |
A big thank you to Chuck A
