Gee, didn't have to wait for a power outage. I have a Candle am/fm/sw from late '60s that is ac/dc but the cord has an end that is not standard today and I've not been able to find. Uses 4 C cells that last about 4 months of average use. So I use it as a portable and keep a extra set in the fridge for backup and simply buy the dollar store batteries. Not even worth buying a recharger and ni-cads. The 350DL they say lasts about 6 months on the D cells and it can use AAs also. I do have rechargable AAs but going the same route as the Candle with the D cells.
I originally bought the Candle from the thrift for about $4 b/c I wanted a decent battery radio in case the power went out. Also have 1 of the 5" b&w am/fm ac/dc and it uses D cells but I've never loaded it up. Come to think of it my old color tv/am/fm/cassette that jr. has in his room also can use D cells but I've never tried it with batteries.
I'd not have passed just b/c it was Dc only. At worse a recharger and some ni-cads.
