My 1st post in Antique Radio~Normende Globetrotter multiband
A semi-local seller,Original owner is parting with
this german radio. The pics below are not the actual unit, but it is for model reference and its supposed condition.I did find some information on 4-5 different models of the globetrotter/globetraveller. This one is portable, powered by 5, D cells only. Im not really into vintage radios, but this might be too good of a deal to pass bye. Any comments would be helpful,Thanks! |

Only problem I see is that it has the European FM band-only goes to 104 McS, rather than 108.

I bought one exactly like your pics from Switzerland. Goes really well. Very sensitive and good sound. Came with all documents including original guarantee, all in German, and mains power supply. Unfortunately it's got an intermittant fault that makes it cut out for a few seconds then comes back on again. Drives me nuts so it's parked at the moment. If it's still there at a good price give it a go.

Thats a nice looking radio. Is that the kind which had a optional adapter that would allow you to use it as a car radio? I think they had a metal cradle that you could mount under your dashboard.

Had a fella up here who did some work for me and he and I were talking shortwaves and portables. His opinion was this series was better in design and construction than the Trans Oceanic. He had one and it was really good sounding and sensitive. I had just bought a 3000 so I did not buy it but less than 6 months later the 3000 died and I went back but had sold it. I've seen a few and most seem to need tlc and they are packed so tight to work on.

Yes, they're nicely built, with a separate tuner section with RF amp for the Shortwave bands arranged around a switch rather than the turret tuner arrangement. VHF tuner is separate too and appears to have an RF stage. Lots of coil cores and trimmer caps to twiddle so I would strongly advise not going there unless you have a sig gen, counter and alignment instructions although the coils are well labelled. Most of the IF/det/af section is pretty standard stuff. And yes there is a car kit but I have'nt seen one. It's circuit is shown in the main schematic. Mine has an open cct signal strength meter which led me astray while restoring, as the AFC needs meter continuity to work properly! Big speaker helps good sound.

I just picked up a Eton S350DL and looking and can only say that they don't make them like they used to. I suspect that when the Eton is as old it will be rare and very few will be working and not repairable.

I forgot I posted this thread back in December,
I ended up passing on the Normende,Mainly because it was portable and battery operated only. (I'll kick myself next time we have a power outage) |

You'll probably kick yourself now if I tell you that there's a socket in the side of the Nordmende for a wall-wart power supply!

Gee, didn't have to wait for a power outage. I have a Candle am/fm/sw from late '60s that is ac/dc but the cord has an end that is not standard today and I've not been able to find. Uses 4 C cells that last about 4 months of average use. So I use it as a portable and keep a extra set in the fridge for backup and simply buy the dollar store batteries. Not even worth buying a recharger and ni-cads. The 350DL they say lasts about 6 months on the D cells and it can use AAs also. I do have rechargable AAs but going the same route as the Candle with the D cells.
I originally bought the Candle from the thrift for about $4 b/c I wanted a decent battery radio in case the power went out. Also have 1 of the 5" b&w am/fm ac/dc and it uses D cells but I've never loaded it up. Come to think of it my old color tv/am/fm/cassette that jr. has in his room also can use D cells but I've never tried it with batteries. I'd not have passed just b/c it was Dc only. At worse a recharger and some ni-cads. |
