They still make the stuff. The back covers from the Sauder assemble-it-yourself furniture, still uses it.
Yes, I know what you mean. There are little tabs still attached to the back of the radio and they look to be more suited to affixing a thinner cardboard material to the back than a heavier hardboard.

I'll need to look into this a bit more.
