This is a very common event, probably on the vast majority of collectible-type items on Ebay. I learned early on, if you want something on Ebay, pick the price you are willing to pay (and it better be at least twice the price you see on any item with more than a day remaining), and "camp out" on the item until the last minute before bidding. If you bid any earlier, you just become the target everyone else has to beat. You may still get beat, but then at least you know they spent more than you were willing to pay.
