Sounds like the CRT is just a little weak. Run with brite & contrast down
in subdued light. Even when new it wont have the snap of a newer set
but can deliver almost as good a pix if running properly. Keep on using it
& the CRT will improve to a point & always do your adjusting after a good warm up.

As far as your cable boxes go try the cable-normal switch. On an RCA
usually on the antenna terminal board or behind the control door.
On portables sometimes along the top rear of cabinet. Its there somewheres !

There are also very common & easy to fix tuner problems with RCA's
but cross that bridge if the time comes. For now best to get things
going with a VCR & tape, something the set "likes" & was designed
to use........
