This is the radio in question, It's a 1951 Australian made Stromberg-Carlson 71A31 radio gram.
It has 7 tubes & the radio is a 3 band-er Standard Broadcast 500-1600 Kc/s, SW 6-18 Mc/s & a second SW band covering 9.5-12 Mc/s (Band spread) The output stage tubes were upgraded from 2 x 6M5's to 2 x 6BQ5's (Sovtec's) as 6M5's are hard to come by & 6BQ5's are still made albeit in the former USSR. I use this radio for listening to OTR shows (Downloaded off the net) via the installed El cheapo DVD, MP3, CD player. The chassis was re-capped & had all electros replaced & and any suspect high value resistors were also replaced & a few silver mica caps were also replaced for faults that were found after the original repairs were carried out. The radio was then aligned to spec with the IF's stagger tuned to plus & minus 3Kc off the center freq of 455Kc to achieve a wider bandwidth then peaked at 455kc for a better frequency response on AM broadcast stations. |
