Another oddball console: Atlantis 609
Hi guys. 5th tube console in two weeks. This one has me mystified. The radio is branded Atlantis. There is a decal on the back; Stereo Radiogram chassis model 609, Made in West Germany. Packaged with a Phillips TT.
I have Googled for hours now, with nothing to even indicate Atlantis was a company making radios. Any help would be appreciated. It powers up, but no volume, just hum. No indication on the magic eye that any signals are being received. Thanks, Joe Last edited by Manitoulin; 03-19-2007 at 01:05 AM.

Looks very similar to a grundig style of the mid 60s, especially the bass and treble setup on the bottom of the face.
The fact that all you hear is hum indicates that the filter capacitors have dried up. Because of that you have no clean B+ voltage, so the radio can't properly operate. They caps are most likely large multisection cans with 10,20, or 40mf ratings.

I looked at the European site radiomuseum.org - no "atlantis" brand, many "atlantis" models, but all were TVs or early '50s (stereo means late 50's to 60's). And searching on model "609" turned up mostly table radios...
I'd say Nordmende, SABA, Lowe, or Grundig from a first glance... see if there's a schematic packet stapled to the bottom - would be nice!

+1 on looking like a Grundig. I used to have a Grundig tabletop radio that vanished in my recent move, but it had a fairly decent tuner and sounded ok. Looked a lot like that, had the glass faceplate with brown and gold color scheme along with the white buttons and all.

Thanks for the help.
Can I replace the suspect caps with electrolytic? Is there a good online resource to help me in fixing old tube receivers? I am assuming that he bad PS caps would be close to the power txfmr and rectifier tube. Is this a logical start? Joe

Yes, the caps would be located near the power transformer. if the chassis is more than 1 inch tall they may also be underneath. They are electrolytics.
Since your already in Canada, I would check out justradios.com They have tons of parts for restoring old sets like this. Service is fast, prices are good, and the list goes on. I would use their shopping cart for the easiest shopping experience. Just make sure your pop-up blocker is off.

Its a Grundig almost 100% sure. The real high end had Dual turntables only the lower or shadow brands had Philips. Grundig also made a brand called Lumophone you will never see that name but I know becouse I found one in a antique store in BC Canada and its was exactly like the Grundig. I have seen a floor model Grundig that looks just like your Atlantis. If i find the paper work on this model i will email it to you. For some reason the Grundigs under the odd labels found their way up to Canada.
