Emerson 1030 Portable. Recapped with white raster.

I bought a emerson 1030 portable that looks as if it was built into some extra portable phonograph cabinets for $5 at a junk store. I replaced both the electrolytic and paper caps, and replaced the blown fuse on the chassis. After the chassis fuse was replaced the HV came right up, and i get a white raster made up of rolling horizontal lines. What section should i look for problems in. There is no audio either, so i take it would be a section common to both audio and video. Am i correct in this suspicion? Im attaching some photos and a video of the raster.

It looks like you are not getting any signal, audio or video. That set probably has intercarrier sound so I would first check/replace the tubes in the tuner. You might want to start by cleaning the tuner. It could be as simple as dirty contacts. When you change channels do you see any flashing on screen or hear any static in the sound? If the tuner checks out, you should then move to the I.F. stages and then the video detector/output stages. At this point, I would suspect loss of signal somewhere.

The picture flashes and there is noise on the screen when the channel changes. I'll start with the tuner. thanks.

That set is almost identical to mine. Mine's a model 146, though I believe there's not much difference between the two. I once had a model 1030 series C set but I really didn't get the chance to do any research as I
traded it to a friend for a '64 Motorola color console a few months back. I
haven't found anything on the 146 yet either.

I've replaced all of the sand resistors as they were getting quite hot, one to the point of smoking. everything runs cooler now.

The sand resistors are hi wattage, they usually will run hot but if one was smoking it would indicate an overload from something, or else it was just dusty from years of disuse.

What circuit was the smoking one in?

I dont happen to have a schematic for the set. The set is transformerless, and i believe that the smoking resistor is in the power supply circuit. Also, the 6bq7 in the tuner had a short. I ordered a new one.

Have you cleaned the tuner contacts at all? years of oxidization will prevent any good contact --keeping your tuner from working.

I'm just about to open the tuner cage to take a look. Its bolted in vertically, so it will be a fun time trying go get it apart.

I'm in a peculiar situation as far as schematics go. All of the Libraries in my area have either thrown out, given away, or no longer allow anyone to use their Sams folders.
Update
I now have video. I cannot get the horizontal or vertical to lock well, put the picture is there. The audio is still dead at the moment. I've been replacing the resistors in the horizontal section, and this seems to be making quite an improvement. Many of the original resistors were lumpy or cracked, and tested way out of the 20% tolerance.
