Motorola 9T1
I put this little Motorola back together tonight.
Man it's hard finding all the pieces after a few years apart, even though I put most of them in the big box with the set  Look at that mint grille cloth! The original cloth had a hole in it and was stretched out of shape, this cloth was right underneath it, all I had to do was lift off the old one! It's a different pattern, don't know why it was there, maybe there were several choices? DVD players make for excellent sources of TV signals for vintage TV sets. The video signal has precise timing and the proper ratios of sync signals, unlike VCR tapes. Also, when using with B&W sets, use the "Y" or "luma" output to feed the TV modulator. The color information is separately stored on the DVD disk, and is only merged with the luma at the "composite" video output jack. Here I installed a TV modulator inside a DVD player .

I might have to disagree...When using a DVD player through a VCR, my old TV's often have trouble with the signal. Lines appearing and disappearing at the top, picture getting lighter and darker...I think its Macrovision, same as on videotapes. However, on a modern TV connected to the same VCR being fed by DVD, picture is good.

Oh yeah...
I used a secret menu on my player to shut off the Macrovision. Seehere and here and here if you have a yahoo account .Only some players are capable of this stuff, check the model before you buy it.

The $36.00 Cyberhome cheapie I used here can't be hacked for the Macrovision, it can however be changed through the hidden menu to play PAL discs.

I've got two of these but one has the badly weathered bakelite you've described. When I restored the set, I sprayed it with clear lacquer but now, looking at yours, I'm rethinking my choice of finishes. Outstanding job!

How well did the clear lacquer work for you? I have several bakelite cabinet Admirals and on the first one I spent two days polishing the bakelite to a very nice sheen. Much elbow grease. Now after sitting in the living room for 5 years it has gone dull all by itself. I has not been sun exposed during this time.

Eric,
It never occured to me about painting bakelite tv cabinets. After seeing how well yours turned out, i know now that it is possible for it to still look good afterwards. The white really brought out the detail on yours that i never had paid attention to on this model before. Nice job and thanks for sharing your idea with us! Tony
