Unhappy Bumblebee-heads at it again!

You could buy an equivalent pair of Orange Drops PLUS a nice pair of steaks for this much money!

cgi.ebay.com/2-SPRAGUE-BUMBLE-BEE-022-mfd-400V-TONE-CAPACITORS_W0QQitemZ190149931620QQihZ009QQcategory Z621QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Of course I post this on a TV-crowd forum, lest I be declared a heretic by those who truuuuly believe!

I can't believe it! To think of the money I've thrown away after all these years. At this rate it would profitable to buy old radios and TVs to cut out the BB caps and sell them on Fee-bay. When is this madness going to end. Is there a secret way of treating these caps to make them non-leaky? Heating them up or putting them in a vacuum chamber? or something? Logan

bumble bee caps

People will pay ridiculous prices for worn out old junk. You can get some new Hovland Musicaps that sound far better (I use them in my guitars) for a whole lot less $$$.

To think that when I recapped a piece of test gear I threw about 6 of them in the garbage. Every time I redo a Fisher I also replace the two Black Imp 0.01 caps with new ceramics (The Imps have a reputation for blowing up).

Those arent even NOS, just clipped out of old equipment. The reason the .022's are so expensive is that Gibson used them in the pickup circuit of the early les paul. Guitarists replace the modern caps in new Les paul's with these because they believe they are part of the classic Les paul sound. Still, it doesnt justify spending thus much money on clipped, leaky caps. At that price, the zenith in my sig could have made me enough to buy a compact car.

Is it really a big deal if they are used in passive circuits like a guitar anyway?

These people don't even realize the safety issues involved when using these old, leaky caps. I wouldn't begin to guess the number of blown apart BB caps I've found in old radios. I've also seen other parts ruined because of leaky capacitors. If I had all the old capacitors that I've clipped out of radio & TV receivers; I'd be on easy street considering the prices paid for these things.

Ya know, i just had a thought.... maybe it is the leaky-ness that gives it that magical sound. I mean whodathunk that letting grapes get stinky in a barrel then squeezing the juice out of them. would make a beverage more fun than ordinary grape juice. Maybe we should run with this? we might have been cursing the goose for laying golden eggs instead of the ones you make omelets out of. I would say we as TV and Radio collectors should have much more access to old BB caps than anyone else. Whaddya think? Logan

Here is what all the fuss is about, The 59' Les Paul tone circuit. People are buying new multi thousand dollar guitars, clipping out the perfectly good orange drops, and soldering in our refuse.
